Learning Chinese Daily Expressions Through A Digital Game

Tang, X.

When students learn a foreign language, it is often difficult to effectively communicate with people in the target language in daily situations. This is because classroom activities do not actually simulate real-life contexts. Digital games could provide a solution. Games immerse learners in different social situations and let them interact with build-in characters in meaningful conversation. A scenario-based interactive game was developed to teach a series of daily expressions in Chinese. The game incorporates key gaming features (i.e., context, goal, feedback, interactivity) to deliver an engaging individualized learning experience. This game is used in my dissertation study to test the effectiveness of game-based language learning. Participants at the Summit will play the game to experience learning Chinese in a playful engaging way.
